Dresses, Street Food & Turtles | Fashion District | Los Angeles, California

Only two more months left until I go to the Philippines to see family, gain lots of weight eating, celebrate the holidays and, importantly, celebrate my parents' and grandparents' 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries. This means shopping for a silver cocktail dress, since the 25th wedding anniversary is called "the silver anniversary." (I don't know who makes up these things but I'm down for themed celebrations)

We decided to go to the design, warehouse and distribution nexus of clothing, accessories and fabric industry, the Los Angeles Fashion District. I've never shopped in the Fashion District, located in Downtown LA, but I have passed by it on my day trips to LA and have heard many girls get their dresses there. The Fashion District spans a few blocks and sells everything, from flowers to textiles, from menswear to womenswear. During this trip, we stay around the Santee Alley between Santee Street and Maple Avenue, which has some of their special occasion apparel. You can either park on the street or at the various parking lots for about $8-$10 for the whole day.

Dresses everywhere!!! I honestly was so tired of looking at dresses by the end of the day. The good and bad of looking for a specific color and style is that I knew exactly what I wanted but was restricted to it. There really isn't as many choices of short dresses compared to the plethora of long gowns. The celebrants, my mom and grandma, were able to find unique dresses at boutiques. But seriously, A LOT of the stores are wholesalers and you see the same dress at countless stores, losing it's unique quality. There are only a few token stores that create and produce their own designs. After 6 hours of searching, we all scored our dress! YAAAAAAS!!! One thing to check off my things to do before I go to the Philippines!

*Tip: Haggle! Bring cash try to get a discount and make the transaction tax-free.

You definitely can't miss out on all the Mexican street food. (bacon wrapped hot dogs, churros, cut fruit, ice cream, the various Mexican drinks in those big jugs, etc. )

One of the two turtles we bought

Little turtles for my little cousins. We picked up two turtles before we left to give to my little cousins as pets. (Hopefully they don't kill them. My aunt better start googling how to take care of turtles.) The vendors were selling these little guys for $7 a piece which include the critter, the container/home, and some food pallets.
