Located on the California coast, the Laguna Museum of Art is an Orange County favorite. It was a participant during the annual SoCal Museum Free-for-all on January 29, 2017, which is when I visited. Check out their website for a calendar of when various Southern Californian Museums have free admission.
» Current Exhibition | Stanton Macdonald-Wright: The Haiga Portfolio «
On display from January 19 - May 29, 2017, The Stanton Macdonald-Wright: The Haiga Portfolio are twenty haiga, or illustrations to haiku poems. Inspired by Japanese art after World War II, Stanton Macdonald-write, an American avant-garde and leader in Modernist painting, took his own spin to the haigas. He spent a period from 1966 to 1967 in Kyoto with Clifton Karhu, a master in Japanese woodblock technique, creating the pieces using woodcuts on rice paper.
The Laguna Art Museum is hosting the 2017 California Cool Art Auction, featuring over 100 California artist and their original work. The preview silent auction is held January 28 - February 3, 2017 and the actual auction on Saturday, February 4, 2017.

I love the The Stanton Macdonald-Wright: The Haiga Portfolio! The colors were bright and thoughtful thus creating a vibrance to the Japanese traditional art. It brought a smile to my face with the whimsical prints and thoughtful colors. Stanton does a wonderful job creating illustrations for the haikus. Art using pictures and words. The collection of California artists is a fantastic exhibition, showcasing artists that draw inspiration from the same home. Seeing different perspectives of their home shows how much creativity there is in the world and how we all see things differently. We are all different and unique.
After you take a trip around the museum, don't forget to check out the beach and tide pools. It's just a few steps away :)
