OCMA: Pop Art & Woman | Newport Beach, California

OCMA: Pop Art Design

The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) is located in Newport Beach, close to Fashion Island. I heard about the OCMA when I was looking up participating museums for the annual Southern California Museum day, a day when selected museums offer free admission. This year it was held on January 29, 2017. The OCMA changes their exhibits quarterly and offer free admission every Friday! This was my first time visiting and it surely will not be my last! » Winter 2017: January 7 - April 2 «

The two exhibits being displayed at the OCMA for the Winter 2017 season are: Pop Art Design & Forms of Identity: Women Artists in the 90s. An art movement started in Britain in the mid 1950s and emerging in the United States during the late 1950s, pop art presents a mix of traditional fine art and pop culture such as advertising and news. For me, when I think about pop art, I think of Andy Warhol and Campbell's soup cans, it is the simple print design and colorful pieces that made pop art different than traditional fine art. This exhibition consists of pieces by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and Richard Hamilton; juxtaposed with the works by designers such as Charles Eames, George Nelson, Achille Castiglioni and Ettore Sottsass.

The 1990s marked a brief period of rapid sociopolitical, economic and cultural transformation, especially woman. Forms of Identity: Women Artists in the 90s is a collection of work that portrays this period through sixteen significant woman artists whose artistry shifted from the political to personal. The featured artists are: China Adams, Laura Aguilar, Polly Apfelbaum, Leslie Brack, Jessica Bronson, Liz Craft, Meg Cranston, Jacci Den Hartog, Dawn Fryling, Diane Gamboa, Rachel Lachowicz, Helen Pashgian, Erika Rothenberg, Alexis Smith, Linda Stark, and Millie Wilson.

Personally, I enjoyed the Pop Art Design exhibit over the Women Artists in the 90s. I love the simple concepts, colorful designs and use of familiar every day objects that Pop Art Design had, there is a sense of nostalgia when walking through the various rooms. You see the art of retro Beatles vinyls, old Coke Cola machines and an old television set.
