As I was scrolling through my Instagram, I saw my friend's post of her covered in a projection of flowers and clicked the location (one of my favorite features of Instagram. Sharing is caring). It was an installment at my favorite museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Downtown (MCASD Downtown), by Jennifer Steinkamp. This post will give you a look at my experience with this art piece and photography tips for your visit.
MCASD Downtown, Jacobs Building | Friday, Dec 16, 2016-Sunday, Aug 20, 2017
On display in the Farrell Gallery at MCASD Downtown is a commissioned installation by Jennifer Steinkamp entitled Madame Curie, 2011. The MCASD writes:
The work was inspired by Steinkamp’s research into atomic energy, atomic explosions, and the effects of these forces on nature. Marie Curie was the recipient of two Nobel Prizes for creating the theory of radioactivity, and discovering radium and polonium. She was also an avid gardener and lover of flowers. An enveloping, panoramic work, this piece activates a field of realistically rendered moving flowers and flowering trees, drawn from a list of over 40 plants mentioned in Marie Curie’s biography, written by her daughter, Eve Curie.
Photography Tips Because of the ever-moving projection and darkness of the rendered flowers it might be a little difficult taking portrait photos. I found that it was easiest to take pictures in front of the yellow and light pink flowers. So when you see them go to that wall before it moves to another. Silhouettes are very successful on this backdrop. Darken the silhouettes post production to really capture a contrasted picture.
* Don't forget to remove flash or else you lose the magic. It's like turning on the lights in Space Mountain at Disneyland. I call these EXPOSED!
*Instagram Tip: If you have an Instagram, a boomerang video looks really cool too!
